History of the organization
The Eritrean Community in SeattleEritreans began arriving in Seattle in the early 1980s as refugees fleeing war and political unrest. Many arrived through joint refugee resettlement programs such as the International Catholic Migration Committee (ICMC) and the Joint Voluntary Agency (JVA). Over time, the Eritrean community grew, establishing deep roots in the city.
Formation of the Eritrean Community Center
In 1983, the Eritrean Community Association in Seattle & Vicinity was founded to help Eritrean families maintain their cultural identity while adapting to life in the United States. The organization has since evolved into the Eritrean Community Center, a vibrant space that:
-
Teaches Eritrean children their language and culture.
-
Provides tutoring and educational support.
-
Assists newly arrived refugees with resources and integration.
-
Hosts community events, celebrations, and support programs.
Our center is more than just a gathering place—it is a pillar of strength and resilience for Eritrean families, offering a space to honor our traditions while building a future for the next generation.

-
Fostering an active and engaged community built on mutual respect.
-
Empowering individuals through education, job training, and healthcare access.
-
Mentoring the next generation to be responsible and engaged citizens.
-
Advocating for critical community needs by partnering with schools, government agencies, and service providers.
