Elderly adults have long been the most vulnerable segment of the Eritrean community. Although traditionally
provided for by their children, in America these seniors are often isolated, lonely.
The overall goal of the Eritrean and East Africans Elderly Independent Living Program is to provide a variety
of health, social, and related support services in a protective setting to meet the culturally specific needs of Eri-
trean and East Africans elders. This program provides culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate ser-
vices to assist the Eritrean and East Africans and non-Eritrean and East Africans elders who live in Seattle and
Vicinity metropolitan area.
The program offers elders aged 60 and older the following services: supplemental security income (SSI), wel-
fare, advocacy, citizenship, translation, transportation, immigration assistance, civic education, social gather-
ing, health education, physical activities, funeral assistance, English language classes, Medicare application,
cultural and traditional ceremonies, and housing assistance.
The 60+ program at ECISV is designed to provide services to this population by connecting them with the re-
sources in their community. The overall goal of the Eritrean and East Africans Elderly Independent Living
